What Can You Do?
If you think you might have metabolic
syndrome, what steps should you
take so you can avoid becoming a
cardiology patient?
“We encourage patients to take the
necessary steps to improve their
cardiovascular health,” says Dr. Oh.
His recommendation is to eat a
heart-healthy diet and
exercise most days of
the week.

Don’t Let a Silent Condition
Get the Best of You
Jeong Park, MD,
cardiologist at
the Adventist
Heart Institute
in Clearlake,
recommends
talking to your
primary care
provider if you think
you may have metabolic syndrome and
he or she hasn’t mentioned it to you.
“There is a general lack of awareness
about metabolic syndrome,” says Dr.
Park. “It’s estimated that 35 percent
of American adults have it, and most
of them don’t know it. It’s important to
know your waist circumference, blood
pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and
triglyceride levels. If your numbers meet
the criteria of metabolic syndrome, take
action now before it’s too late.”
